This measure aims to recoup operational costs, facilitate timely processing of new applications, and address financial deficiencies in the current fee program. The review highlighted the inadequacy of the current system to cover the total costs of operations, which includes expansions of humanitarian programs and federal wage increases.
The implementation of the new fees is scheduled for April 1, 2024, with the hope of generating revenue to improve efficiency and address the increase in cases related to the border. The final rule also includes reductions in annual cost recovery, exemptions, special discounts, and consideration of public comments during the review process.
