New Measures Aim to Streamline Immigration Processes and Increase Operational Capacity
The administration of President Donald Trump has announced a series of proposals to modify the U.S. immigration system. Among the measures is the implementation of faster deportation processes for certain asylum applicants and a significant budget allocation to strengthen the system’s resources and capabilities.
Elimination of hearings in some asylum cases
One of the most notable proposals would allow asylum seekers who entered the country irregularly to be placed directly into expedited removal proceedings, without the opportunity to present their case before an immigration judge. If approved, this measure would apply to pending cases that have not yet reached a court hearing, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
Legislative proposal with a large budget
The initiative, presented in the House of Representatives, includes a proposed law with a budget allocation of approximately $150 billion over the next four years. The funds would be directed to:
- Expanding infrastructure on the southern border
- Increasing detention capacity for immigration agencies
- Hiring new immigration officers and judges
- Funding the transport and repatriation of individuals in removal proceedings
- Strengthening the protection system for unaccompanied minors
- Supporting legal services within the immigration system
Goal: reduce wait times and strengthen enforcement
According to its sponsors, this strategy aims to reduce the backlog in immigration courts, reinforce law enforcement, and ensure a more efficient management of migration flows. It is also noted that part of the budget would be used to reimburse state governments for costs related to immigration law enforcement.
Diverse opinions and congressional review
Various groups have expressed differing views on the potential impact of these reforms. Some organizations specializing in immigration issues have stressed the need to maintain adequate legal safeguards. Meanwhile, Congress will need to review and debate the proposal before any measure can take effect.
Current context
The United States has seen an increase in asylum applications in recent years. The proposed reforms aim to address this growth through administrative and financial restructuring that, according to their advocates, would help optimize existing resources.
