A quarter of a million international students have been denied visas, amounting to 36% of all applicants.

One political party is holding urgent press conferences and congressional hearings on the issue. The other claims it is a dangerous distraction aimed at sowing doubts ahead of this year’s U.S. presidential election.

In recent months, the specter of illegal voting by immigrants has become one of the main discussion points for Republicans during the election year. They argue that a bill is needed to protect the sanctity of the vote as the country faces unprecedented levels of irregular immigration at the Mexican border.

Voting by non-U.S. citizens is already illegal in federal elections, and there are no indications that it is occurring anywhere in significant numbers. However, Republican lawmakers at both federal and state levels are focusing their energy on this issue, introducing legislative proposals and electoral measures for the fall, ensuring that the topic will remain in voters’ minds in the coming months.

Congressional Republicans are pushing a bill called SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility), which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Meanwhile, Republican legislatures in at least six states have included measures to prevent non-citizen voting on the November 5 ballots, and at least two others are debating whether to do so.
