US Maintains Base in Guantanamo. The United States is considering the possibility of using the Guantanamo Naval Base as a measure in the event of a massive exodus of Haitian migrants by sea, due to the serious security situation in Haiti.

The White House acknowledges that in the past, this location has been used to process maritime migrants.

Violence and gang control in Haiti have led to a crisis, with over 360,000 internally displaced people.

While the Guantanamo option remains on the table, there are no concrete plans regarding it. Typically, migrants intercepted at sea are processed in centers in Florida or sent to Guantanamo, with Haitians and Cubans being the most common groups attempting to reach US shores.

Regularly, immigrants attempting to illegally reach US shores by sea are processed in Florida centers and others are sent to facilities in Guantanamo.

Haitians and Cubans are among the two most common groups attempting to reach US shores by sea, as periodically reported by the Border Patrol.
