USCIS Simplifies the Work Authorization Documents Process for Refugees

USCIS has introduced a more efficient process for granting Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) to eligible refugees in the United States, reducing the waiting time to approximately 30 days instead of several months. This new method, automated and without the need for refugees to apply, streamlines the processing of Form I-765 and the delivery of EADs once approved.

Under this system, USCIS digitally creates a Form I-765 for each refugee upon arrival in the United States and processes it immediately. Once approved, refugees typically receive their EAD within one or two weeks by priority mail. Additionally, USCIS facilitates the necessary information for the Social Security Administration to assign a Social Security number and send the corresponding card by mail.

This streamlined process, which began on December 10, 2023, following a successful pilot program, aims to enhance the integration of newly arrived refugees by reducing bureaucracy and expediting the acquisition of important documents. However, it does not apply to family reunification refugees or those seeking to renew or replace their EAD, who still need to complete Form I-765.
