US job report reveals growth among native-born workforce

On August 4, 2025, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a statement regarding the July employment report data. According to the information presented, job growth has been concentrated among workers born in the United States, in the context of recent changes in immigration policy.

According to DHS, the evolution of the labor market reflects a shift in the composition of the workforce, where the participation of undocumented immigrants has decreased and employment among US citizens has increased.

    Voluntary Exit Program

DHS continues to promote the CBP One app, a program that facilitates voluntary departure from the country for individuals without regular immigration status. This mechanism includes:

    • A financial incentive of $1,000 USD
    • No-cost flight ticket
    • Return logistical support
    • The opportunity to apply for future legal entry, as provided by law

The goal of the program is to offer a structured and voluntary return alternative, in line with current migration policies.

    Economic impact of tariffs

The DHS also reported a significant increase in tariff collection in 2025. Since January, more than $130 billion has been collected, surpassing figures recorded in previous fiscal years. This increase is linked to the elimination of the de minimis exemption, a trade mechanism that allowed for the importation of low-value products without applying tariffs.

According to the report, the elimination of this exemption aims to strengthen controls in international trade, prevent the entry of unregulated products, and provide greater protection for consumers and businesses within the country.

    Key points

    • Increase in employment among US-born citizens, according to July figures.
    • Continuation of the voluntary departure program, with incentives for individuals without regular immigration status.
    • Record increase in tariff collection, fueled by trade control policies.
