U.S. Implements New Feature in CBP App to Facilitate Self-Deportation

U.S. immigration authorities have announced a new feature in the CBP Home app that will allow undocumented migrants to report their voluntary departure from the country, a process being referred to as “self-deportation.” This tool is part of the measures implemented by President Donald Trump’s administration to strengthen immigration control and expedite the departure of individuals in irregular status.

    Transformation of the CBP App

The CBP Home app is an evolution of CBP One, which, under former President Joe Biden’s administration, allowed migrants in Mexico to schedule appointments with border agents to request asylum. However, on Trump’s first day in office, CBP One was suspended, and this new platform was introduced with a focus on immigration enforcement and regulation.

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that this feature aims to “restore the integrity of the immigration system.” According to official statements, the previous administration allegedly allowed over a million undocumented migrants to enter through CBP One, something the current administration seeks to correct.

How Does the New Tool Work?

Migrants who decide to voluntarily leave the United States can use the CBP Home app on their mobile devices to fill out a form notifying authorities of their intention to leave the country. Additionally, this tool will provide assistance in booking return flights to their countries of origin and help them avoid legal and financial penalties associated with irregular stay in the U.S.

Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, emphasized that this new feature will offer a “simple and accessible process” for undocumented migrants to manage their departure without facing future penalties.

    Mandatory Registration for Undocumented Migrants

Alongside the launch of this tool, the DHS issued a directive requiring undocumented migrants over the age of 14, who were not previously registered upon entry, to complete a biometric identification process if they remain in the country for more than 30 days. This effort is part of an initiative to reinforce immigration control and improve identification of individuals in irregular status.

    Campaign to Discourage Irregular Migration

The implementation of this feature is part of a national and international media campaign urging undocumented migrants to “not enter” the U.S. and advising those already in the country to “leave now.” This strategy aims to deter irregular migration and enforce the executive orders recently signed by President Trump.

    Implications and Reactions

The introduction of the self-deportation feature in CBP Home has sparked various reactions from experts and immigrant rights organizations. While some see this measure as a way to facilitate an orderly departure for migrants, others have expressed concerns about its impact on vulnerable populations seeking protection in the United States.

For now, the new policy remains part of a broader strategy focused on tightening immigration regulations and reducing the number of undocumented individuals residing in the country.
