Shelters in Northern Mexico Prepare for Mass Deportations

Migrant shelters in northern Mexico are stepping up efforts in anticipation of potential deportations from the United States under the new administration of Donald Trump. Non-governmental and religious organizations are focusing on facilitating the labor reintegration of deportees and documenting potential abuses at the border.

Reframing Support for Deported Migrants

During a recent meeting in Nuevo León, representatives from 28 shelters agreed to redirect their services, originally designed for migrants in transit, toward assisting deportees. Key initiatives include:

• Immediate labor placement: In collaboration with local businesses, shelters are working to secure jobs for deportees. Monterrey, an industrial hub with a labor shortage of over 15,000 workers, is a focal point of these efforts.
• Data collection on abuses: With support from the U.S.-based NGO Immigrant Hope, a database will be created to document human rights violations on both sides of the border.

Uncertainty and Challenges for Organizations

Although the Mexican administration, led by Claudia Sheinbaum, has pledged legal and administrative support for deportees, details remain unclear. It is uncertain whether deportations will include people of other nationalities or be limited to Mexican citizens.

The lack of federal funding further complicates the shelters’ work. However, Nuevo León stands out for allocating state resources to civil society organizations supporting migrants.

A Call to the Federal Government

In the final statement of the meeting, shelters urged the Mexican government to:

• Increase funding for organizations serving migrants.
• Promote regularization programs for migrants in Mexico.
• Investigate and sanction abuses against this vulnerable population.

Despite the challenging outlook, shelters remain committed to providing comprehensive support and advocating for solutions that uphold human rights.
