The dangerous migration route through the Darién Gap has been interrupted following the capture of several boat captains transporting migrants back to their starting point in the jungle.

Transportation companies, in protest of the detentions, have suspended their operations, leaving thousands of people stranded who attempt to cross from Colombia to Panama on a daily basis.
It is estimated that there are 8,000 migrants waiting, leading to a serious humanitarian crisis. The Colombian Ombudsman’s Office warns that the situation could “overwhelm the health system, food supply, among others”.
Colombian authorities are seeking to combat human trafficking in the region, but the system is deeply entrenched and the crisis could worsen.
