A judge blocks stricter oversight of Washington State immigrant detention center
A federal judge has blocked the enforcement of a Washington state law aimed at improving living conditions at the Northwest immigrant detention center, managed by the private company Geo Group.
The law required:
- Better hygiene and food conditions.
- Unannounced inspections by authorities.
- Right to file lawsuits for conditions.
- Fines for non-compliance.
Geo Group sued the state alleging discrimination, and the judge ruled in their favor.

The judge argues that the law violates the Constitution by imposing greater requirements on federal contractors than on state contractors.
The governor’s and attorney general’s offices have not made any statements regarding this matter.
More than 90% of immigrants detained by ICE are held in private centers like the one in Tacoma.
Geo Group is a company that owns, manages, or leases over 100 correctional, immigration detention, and treatment facilities.
In summary, the judge has blocked Washington’s law aimed at improving living conditions at the Northwest detention center, and has ruled in favor of Geo Group in their lawsuit against the state.
