A bill advances in Oklahoma allowing police to arrest undocumented immigrants. Oklahoma is advancing with its HB 4156 bill, which allows local police to arrest undocumented immigrants within their territory. In doing so, it aligns with Republican-led states that have tightened their legislation to address the border crisis, for which President Joe Biden has been heavily criticized. The initiative was passed in the House of Representatives and now awaits approval in the Senate, although Governor Kevin Stitt expressed that he is not in favor of enacting it.

Under the concept of “inadmissible occupation,” the bill, pushed by Republican Representative Jon Echols, classifies the presence of individuals without legal immigration status in Oklahoma as a crime and provides for penalties of up to two years in prison. Following approval in the lower chamber, where there were 70 votes in favor and 20 against, the bill now moves to the Senate, where it will be debated in the coming days.
The approval of the law would include Oklahoma in a long list of Republican-led states that have advanced such laws, with Texas leading the way followed by others such as Florida, Georgia, Iowa, and Ohio.
