Undocumented Workers in Florida Demand Better Wages and Conditions
In South Florida, a group of undocumented construction workers has denounced low wages and unfavorable working conditions. A recent demonstration in Miami highlighted the challenges faced by these workers, many of whom build luxury buildings while living in poverty. These employees, who lack legal documentation, face abusive labor practices and a lack of protection from their employers and the government.
Wages in the Construction Industry
According to the WeCount! project, the average wage in commercial construction in Florida is approximately $19 per hour, although this value can be significantly lower for certain trades. Workers performing physically demanding jobs, such as drywall installers and plumbers, earn less than $15 per hour, which is insufficient considering the high cost of living in the region.

Workers’ Demands
The demonstrators are demanding safer working conditions and an increase in wages. Among the main requests are the implementation of safety regulations that include access to drinking water and work breaks, especially in extreme heat conditions.

The situation is particularly difficult for undocumented workers, who face labor abuses such as withheld wages or unsanitary working conditions. Some have reported being afraid to demand improvements due to potential retaliation over their immigration status.
Response from Authorities
The Miami-Dade County Commission has indicated its intention to review local legislation to provide protection for construction workers, although no concrete measures have yet been implemented. Activists hope that policies will be enacted to improve working and safety conditions for all employees, regardless of their immigration status.
