Drop in Migrant Numbers at the U.S. Border
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported a significant decrease in the number of migrant encounters at the southern border in August 2024. According to official data, approximately 58,000 encounters were recorded, marking a 68% drop compared to the 181,000 encounters in the same month of 2023.
This decline has been attributed to an executive order issued by the current administration in June 2024, which has led to an increase in the enforcement of immigration laws. Since these measures were implemented, a 50% reduction in migrant encounters has been observed.

Additionally, the CBP One mobile app has played a crucial role in managing border processes, allowing migrants to schedule appointments for legal entry rather than attempting unauthorized crossings. In August, over 44,700 migrants were processed through this platform, which has enabled the scheduling of more than 813,000 appointments since its launch in January 2023.
On the deportation front, over 131,000 deportations to more than 140 countries have been carried out since June, with nearly 400 international repatriation flights.
Despite the decrease in encounters, some lawmakers have raised concerns about border security, arguing that current policies may influence the number of migrants attempting to cross. Migration experts have pointed out that the motivations for emigrating to the U.S. are often linked to economic factors and job opportunities.
