The U.S. launches a plan to deter networks trafficking undocumented migrants. The $578 million program will be distributed among Western Hemisphere countries working with the United States to combat undocumented immigration (by punishing the criminal organizations promoting it) and promote legal and orderly immigration to the United States.
The State Department announced an ambitious plan aimed at deterring the criminal organizations that control undocumented migration routes to the United States.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that the government will sanction those who facilitate “irregular immigration,” a contentious issue that concerns the president’s reelection campaign and that Republicans are pushing for in favor of former President Donald Trump’s discourse, the almost certain nominee of the Republican Party.
Blinken announced $578 million in aid for Latin America during a press conference held in Guatemala, one of the countries from which the most migrants have arrived in the United States in the last decade. He defended taking tougher measures against criminal groups controlling migration routes from the south, Central America, and Mexico.
The funds from the new program will be allocated to “partner countries (in the effort to control and stop undocumented immigration and promote legal and orderly migration) and host communities in responding to urgent humanitarian needs,” the White House said in a statement.
