U.S. Senate Discusses Future of DACA: Economic Contribution vs. National Security

The U.S. Senate is discussing the future of DACA. The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing to discuss the contributions of so-called ‘Dreamers’ and hear arguments for and against granting them a pathway to citizenship. These immigrants were brought to the country as children.
With testimonies highlighting the contributions of the so-called “Dreamers” to the country and their communities, a hearing was held before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to urge Congress to finally take action to protect them.

“For many of us, the country we come from exists only in our memories. The only country we know is here, where we stayed. If DACA beneficiaries had a path to citizenship, they would be doing a favor to the economy because we would support our country without fear. If DACA is ever eliminated, all our lives will return to limbo,” said police officer Mitchell Soto Rodríguez during her testimony, who arrived with her parents from Mexico when she was nine years old.
Economic Contribution of DACA Immigrants According to Professor Tom K. Wong, who was invited to the hearing, Dreamers contribute approximately $45 billion to the economy through their wages, as well as $13 million in tax payments.
“If DACA were to end, experts estimate that the U.S. economy could lose $1 billion monthly as DACA beneficiaries’ work permits expire over a two-year period. Additionally, over half a million American jobs would be lost during the same period,” explained Wong.
