New Law Facilitates Foreign Doctors’ Practice in Florida
The SB 7016 law, recently passed in this southern US state, allows doctors and other healthcare professionals to practice their profession by exempting them from some previously required requirements.
A law passed in the state of Florida allows foreign-educated medical professionals to practice in the healthcare sector without having to meet the requirement of medical residency.
The SB 7016 law, known as “Live Healthy” and signed in March by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, represents strong support for immigrant doctors and healthcare professionals.

The regulation may enable these healthcare professionals to bypass the previously mandatory requirement of having a minimum of three years of medical residency.
“People had to go to the island of Puerto Rico to do a one-year internship to meet that requirement and then be able to pass all the exams,” said Colombian neurologist Laureano Chileuitta, who supports the law, to Voice of America.
Governor DeSantis, meanwhile, considers it a favorable step toward growing the workforce in the state.
“And that’s going to help us expand and do what we need to have a great healthcare workforce… which is important, and a growing state is going to need it. We’re talking about underserved areas, we’re talking about low-income areas,” said the Republican politician.
The law establishes, among other requirements, practicing medicine in the four years preceding the application for a license in Florida.
