US Records Fewer Arrests for Illegal Crossings of its Southern Border
The US records fewer arrests for illegal crossings of its border. The number of arrests for illegally crossing the southern border of the United States fell slightly in March, authorities said Friday, a decline that goes against the usual increase that tends to occur in the northern spring, amid increased surveillance in Mexico.
The Border Patrol made 137,480 arrests of people entering from Mexico, a 2.3% drop from the 140,638 arrests in February, the first time since 2017 that arrests have fallen in March compared to the previous month. Crossings typically increase as the weather warms.

Mexico made 240,000 migrant detentions in the first two months of the year, more than triple the number in the same period in 2023, and sent many southward to discourage them from traveling to the United States. Although Mexico has not released March figures, US authorities have said that Mexican authorities’ surveillance is largely responsible for the recent declines.
