United States Doubled Deportations of Irregular Migrants in 2023

In a surprising turn during the fiscal year 2023, the United States has recorded a significant increase in the number of deported irregular migrants, according to the recent report from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The figures show that the U.S. administration expelled 142,580 individuals from the country, nearly double the deportations in the previous fiscal period. This abrupt rise in deportations has had a significant impact, with people being sent to more than 170 countries, especially Mexico, from where over half of the deportees originated.

Staggering Numbers:

During the period from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023, U.S. authorities executed a total of 170,590 arrest warrants, marking a 19.5% increase compared to the previous fiscal year. Of this number, 73,822 were individuals without citizenship and with criminal backgrounds, revealing a concerning connection between irregular immigration and criminal activities. The data reveals that the arrested individuals had, on average, four charges and convictions per person, spanning a wide range of offenses from assaults to kidnappings.

One of the peculiarities of the fiscal year 2023 was the implementation of Title 42, an emergency measure allowing expedited expulsions from the border. Although this measure was suspended in May, during its validity, 62,545 deportations were carried out under this legal framework. This fact is particularly relevant, as in the fiscal year 2022, a total of 65,076 expulsion orders were issued. Additionally, the destinations of these expulsions covered more than 170 countries, with Mexico being the main recipient, with 54,056 people originating from this country.

Decisive Actions:

The report also highlights the actions of the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which seized 1.2 million pounds (544.3 kilograms) of narcotics and provided assistance to 1,806 victims of child exploitation. These efforts aim to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and safeguard national and public security.

In the words of ICE Deputy Director Patrick J. Leichleitner, these actions aim to “defend the integrity of U.S. immigration laws.” The report emerges in a context where migration tensions remain a hot topic, as evidenced by the recent detentions of over 242,000 migrants and asylum seekers at the southern border in the month of November. This sustained increase raises questions about U.S. immigration policy and its repercussions both nationally and internationally.
