The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a significant update to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program, aimed at strengthening the verification of citizenship and immigration status nationwide. This enhancement seeks to provide state and local authorities with a reliable and efficient tool to confirm the eligibility of individuals registered to vote in U.S. elections.
Thanks to a new collaboration between USCIS and the Social Security Administration, state and local agencies can now directly use Social Security numbers to verify U.S. citizenship, without relying on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identification number, which many entities do not collect.

This change represents a key improvement, as it allows for the creation of multiple verification cases simultaneously, streamlining the process and reducing processing times. These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure the integrity of the electoral system, in line with Executive Order 14248, “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.”
Additionally, as of April 1, 2025, USCIS has eliminated all fees for the use of the SAVE system by state, local, tribal, and territorial agencies, further facilitating access to this tool.
The SAVE program is a centralized source of information used by government agencies at all levels to verify the immigration status and citizenship of individuals applying for public benefits, licenses, or voter registration. By integrating new features and interagency partnerships, USCIS aims to deliver technological solutions that ensure a more transparent and trustworthy process.
State and local governments are encouraged to register and take advantage of these expanded capabilities. For more information about the SAVE program and other USCIS initiatives, visit uscis.gov.
