UNICEF Urges Protection for Migrant Children Following New Mediterranean Shipwrecks
UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, has issued an urgent call for governments to prioritize the safety and protection of migrant children. This appeal follows a shipwreck near the island of Lampedusa that left several people missing, including the parents of an 8-year-old girl who survived.
Alarming Numbers of Missing Migrants
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2,275 people have gone missing in the Mediterranean in 2024, bringing the total number of disappearances since 2014 to over 31,000. Of these, more than 24,000 were lost along the perilous Central Mediterranean route, frequently used by traffickers to transport migrants from Libya and Tunisia to Italy.

Heartbreaking Stories
The New Year’s Eve shipwreck left an 8-year-old girl among the few survivors. Her mother is among those missing. Another case in December involved an 11-year-old girl found floating alone near Lampedusa after the boat carrying her and 45 others disappeared.
UNICEF’s Proposed Actions
UNICEF has urged governments to ensure:
- Legal and safe pathways for family reunification.
- Access to proper asylum services.
- Coordinated search and rescue operations, along with secure disembarkation points.
- Community-based reception systems to provide a safe and humane environment for migrant children.
In its statement, UNICEF stressed that protecting migrant children is a legal obligation under international law, particularly in the context of an ongoing crisis that continues to claim lives in the Mediterranean.
The Situation in Italy
Italy, under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, has implemented policies to curb migrant arrivals. These include measures to combat smuggling and process asylum applications in Albania as a deterrence strategy. In 2024, Italy recorded 66,317 sea arrivals—less than half of those reported in 2023, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

The Mediterranean migration crisis remains a humanitarian issue of global significance. UNICEF’s appeal aims not only to highlight the vulnerability of migrant children but also to urge countries to find sustainable and humane solutions that uphold the rights of those seeking a better future.
