El Paso (U.S.) (EFE) – The United States does not plan to increase the number of daily appointments available on the CBP One application, which allows migrants arriving at the southern border to present themselves at a port of entry to request protection, asylum, and access to the country.
In statements to a group of media outlets, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Friday that the government has a “limited capacity” to process migrant cases.

Currently, the U.S. only offers 1,450 daily appointments through this application for the entire southern border.
Following the implementation of a series of asylum restrictions for those who cross the border irregularly, the government has ensured that the CBP One app is now the only tool available to migrants in transit or already on the Mexican side of the border to request asylum in the country.
How Do Appointments for Migrants Work?
The Democratic administration, Mayorkas explained in the phone call with reporters, will not offer more appointments due to facing a “series of operational and political constraints.”
The secretary emphasized that annually, CBP One allows more than “500,000 people per year” to present themselves at ports of entry on the border to submit their protection request cases.
At these appointments, which are scheduled through the application, migrants cannot request asylum per se. Instead, they are granted entry to the country under a legal figure known as “humanitarian parole” and are given a later date to appear before an immigration court where they can request asylum.
Additionally, once in the country with this permit, migrants can apply for a work permit.
