Trump states that the suspension of asylum decisions will last “for a long time”
President Donald Trump declared that the nationwide pause on asylum decisions will remain “for a long time,” following the attack in which an Afghan citizen allegedly shot two National Guard members near the White House, causing the death of one of the victims. Trump asserted that there is no defined time limit for lifting the measure, which the Department of Homeland Security links to a list of 19 countries subject to travel restrictions in the United States.
According to the president, this prolonged pause responds to national security concerns. Trump stated that the United States “does not want” the entry of people from those countries due to risks that, according to him, have already been demonstrated and should not “be in our country.”
In parallel, Trump reported that he invited the family of Sarah Beckstrom, the 20-year-old soldier who died in the attack, to the White House. He also mentioned that he spoke with her parents, who are deeply affected, and offered to honor her memory in an official event. The other injured service member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition while communities in West Virginia hold vigils in support of both families.
The indefinite suspension of asylum decisions, along with other measures adopted after the attack, marks a considerable tightening of U.S. immigration policy, generating concern among organizations and applicants who remain awaiting a resolution in their cases.
