Democratic lawmakers and activists are pressuring President Joe Biden to take measures to protect undocumented immigrants in U.S. territory, while the administration is simultaneously studying executive actions to reduce illegal border crossings.

The White House is exploring ways to grant temporary legal status and work permits to undocumented immigrants in the United States married to citizens of the country, said three sources familiar with the matter on Monday, a move that could energize some Democrats ahead of the November elections.

Democratic lawmakers and immigrant advocates have pressed President Joe Biden to take action to protect immigrants who are illegally in U.S. territory, while Biden is also considering executive measures to reduce illegal border crossings.

Immigration has become one of the top concerns for voters, especially among Republicans, ahead of the November 5 elections that will pit Biden against his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, who has said that the Democrat’s less restrictive policies have led to an increase in illegal immigration.

In recent months, the White House has considered the possibility of adopting executive measures to block the entry of immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border if illegal crossings reach a certain threshold, sparking criticism from some Democrats and immigrant advocates.
