Some Democratic Cities Have Started to Cooperate Discreetly with ICE

Some sanctuary cities that previously did not notify ICE when releasing undocumented immigrants from jail are now doing so due to public concern about crime.

Jurisdictions across the country are reevaluating their sanctuary city policies and increasing their cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the interest of public safety, the head of ICE told NBC News.

In an interview, Acting ICE Director PJ Lechleitner said that some counties and cities that previously refused to inform ICE when releasing undocumented immigrants from jail are now exploring ways to coordinate more closely with ICE, such as giving advance notice before releasing immigrants convicted of violent crimes.

Previously, those jurisdictions were among the many cities with Democratic or progressive leaders who refused to work with ICE for fear it could hinder crime investigations. They believed that migrants would be afraid to report crimes if contacting authorities exposed them to the risk of deportation.
