New Mexican Government Confirms Migration Control Strategy at U.S. Border

The incoming government of Mexico has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its migration containment policy at the U.S. border, a measure authorities deem effective and humanitarian in approach. This announcement comes just days after Donald Trump’s electoral victory in the United States, where he has outlined plans to tighten immigration policies during his upcoming term.

Containment Strategy: Humanitarian Approach and Effectiveness

Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente explained that the country will continue implementing control measures along its northern border to reduce the flow of migrants attempting to enter the United States. During a recent press conference, he emphasized that this model, described as “humanitarian,” has shown positive results, evidenced by a 76% decrease in the number of migrants detained at the border since December.

This containment approach includes support programs for migrants who choose to remain in Mexico, such as access to employment and the protection of human rights, aligning with the humanitarian principles of the Mexican government. Additionally, the country has expanded its transportation efforts to assist migrants traveling south, helping those unable to cross into the U.S. return to their places of origin or relocate to safer regions within Mexico.

    Mexico-U.S. Dialogue on Migration

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also highlighted a cordial conversation with Donald Trump following his recent electoral victory. Although migration was only briefly mentioned, Sheinbaum indicated that further discussions on border issues are anticipated in the future. During the call, Trump expressed interest in maintaining a cooperative relationship similar to the one he had with former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Trump has warned of imposing a 25% tariff on all Mexican exports if migration and drug trafficking into the U.S. are not curbed. This measure aims to strengthen control at the southern U.S. border. Mexico’s economy heavily relies on trade with its northern neighbor, as approximately 80% of its exports are destined for the U.S. market.

What Does This Strategy Mean for the Future?

Mexico’s migration containment strategy represents a commitment to balancing the protection of human rights with regional security cooperation. The incoming government continues to develop policies to maintain migration control without resorting to extreme measures, seeking a balance between upholding international agreements and respecting the rights of migrants.

Next year, both governments are expected to discuss more specific details of the migration strategy and consider potential adjustments based on the priorities of the new U.S. administration.
