Mexico’s Government Open to Receiving Non-Mexican Migrants Deported Under Trump’s Policies

The Mexican government has expressed its willingness to receive non-Mexican migrants deported under the policies announced by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. According to statements by President Claudia Sheinbaum, this stance is contingent on specific conditions, such as receiving financial support to facilitate the return of these individuals to their countries of origin.

Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s commitment to welcoming deported Mexican nationals and emphasized that the country is prepared to implement support plans if necessary. However, she insisted that coordinating with Washington on solutions that include the direct repatriation of non-Mexican migrants to their home countries is essential.

    Deportation Context

The mass deportation policies previously announced by Trump during his first administration (2017–2021) had already led to significant migrant build-ups at Mexico’s northern border. During that period, thousands of people were returned under regulations such as the “Remain in Mexico” program and the public health rule implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current landscape shows a decline in the return of irregular migrants from Mexico due to a lack of funding, with numbers dropping sharply in recent years—from over 120,000 in 2022 to just 16,500 between January and August 2024.

    Next Steps

Mexico’s response to these potential deportations will be a key topic at a foreign ministers’ meeting the country plans to hold in January, as a follow-up to the 2023 Palenque summit. This gathering aims to generate joint solutions with migrants’ countries of origin and transit.

Additionally, the Mexican government has announced a legal support plan for its citizens through consulates in the U.S., focusing on protecting migrants’ rights and ensuring family reunification.

As further details on the upcoming U.S. administration’s immigration policies are awaited, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to solidarity and international cooperation in addressing the region’s migration challenges.
