Important Information on Where to File Your Asylum Application: Effective May 9, 2024, USCIS will reject affirmative asylum applications filed incorrectly at a service center instead of at the lockbox jurisdictional to your place of residence. USCIS announced this change in filing location on May 31, 2023. USCIS anticipates this change will help streamline asylum processing and improve efficiency in adjudication through the digitization of paper applications.

Certain categories of affirmative asylum applicants must continue to submit their applications directly to the Asylum Research Center. Unaccompanied minors in immigration court proceedings must submit their applications to the lockbox. Electronic filing of applications is also available for affirmative asylum applicants not in immigration court proceedings and who are not required to submit their application to the Asylum Research Center.
