ICE Detainer Orders in New York Surge Over 400% in 2025

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported a significant increase in detainer orders issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York during 2025. Between January 20 and July, ICE filed 6,025 requests, representing a rise of over 400% compared to the total registered during the entire previous administration.

During the prior administration, 9,472 detainers were reported in New York. However, that figure has already been surpassed in just six months under the new administration of President Trump and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

    Sanctuary Cities Maintain Their Stance

Despite the high volume of requests, local authorities responded to only a portion of them. New York continues to enforce “sanctuary city” policies, meaning it limits cooperation between its law enforcement agencies and ICE.

In this city, local authorities do not collaborate with ICE, even when there are active criminal warrants. Their main argument is to protect immigrants’ rights and maintain community trust.

    What an ICE Detainer Means

An ICE detainer is a formal request sent to local agencies to hold foreign nationals in custody. The goal is to facilitate their transfer to federal authorities. Typically, these individuals have criminal records, active deportation orders, or are considered potential threats to public safety.

DHS Concern Over Lack of Cooperation

DHS has expressed concern over the lack of response to these requests. It highlighted recent cases where individuals with criminal backgrounds were released and later involved in violent acts.

Additionally, the agency reported an 830% increase in assaults against ICE officers since the start of the new administration. This phenomenon is linked to social tensions surrounding immigration policies and rhetoric in media and social networks.

    Federal Commitment Remains Firm

The Department of Homeland Security reaffirmed that it will continue issuing detainers and enforcing immigration law. According to the official statement, the goal remains to protect public safety, regardless of local policies or external political pressure.
