Florida toughens laws against illegal immigration

The state of Florida has approved a new legislative package that significantly toughens measures against illegal immigration. These laws, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, include the death penalty for undocumented immigrants who are found guilty of serious crimes, as well as new restrictions for those who reside in the state without legal status.

Main provisions of the new laws

The rules, identified as SB 2-C and SB 4-C, make Florida one of the states with the strictest immigration legislation. Among its main measures are:

Death penalty for serious crimes: Undocumented immigrants convicted of premeditated murder or child rape may face the death penalty.

Criminalization of re-entry into the state: Those who enter without authorization may face jail sentences of up to six months, increasing to two years in cases of repeat offenses.

Restrictions on driver’s licenses and identification: Immigrants without legal status will not be able to apply for these documents in Florida.

Limitations on access to education: Undocumented students will not be able to access state tuition at universities and community centers.

Increased budget for immigration surveillance: $298 million will be allocated to hire more than 50 agents specialized in immigration supervision and the acquisition of equipment.

    Reactions and context

Governor DeSantis has stated that these measures seek to strengthen state security and collaborate with the federal administration in immigration control. For its part, the White House has reiterated its commitment to strengthening border security and the application of immigration laws.

However, the new provisions have generated controversy. Various sectors, including human rights organizations and opposition legislators, have argued that some of these measures could face legal challenges, citing Supreme Court precedents on the application of the death penalty.

Impact of the new laws in Florida

With the implementation of this legislative package, Florida strengthens its stance against irregular immigration, aligning itself with stricter immigration policies at the federal level. These laws are expected to have a significant impact on the state’s immigrant community, as well as on the national debate on immigration policies in the United States.
