Eagle Pass Receives Presidential Permit to Expand Border Crossing with Mexico

On June 20, 2025, the city of Eagle Pass, Texas, received official presidential approval to expand, maintain, and operate a new section of the vehicular and pedestrian border crossing at the Camino Real International Bridge land port, located on the U.S.-Mexico border.

This authorization allows progress on a key project to improve border infrastructure between the two countries, increasing transit capacity, facilitating trade, and optimizing binational mobility.

You might also read: “New measures aim to streamline immigration processes and boost operational capacity.”

What does the approved project include?

The presidential permit authorizes the construction of six new vehicular lanes on an additional section of the existing bridge. The new facilities will be located approximately half a mile south of the Eagle Pass–Piedras Negras International Bridge, and immediately north of the Union Pacific International Railroad Bridge. In addition to the lanes, the project includes access points, structures, land, and equipment necessary for the proper operation of the crossing.

    Conditions of the authorization

The approval is subject to various conditions to ensure the project’s safety, legality, and sustainability:

    • Regulatory compliance: All construction must be carried out in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
    • Environmental oversight: The permit holder must implement environmental mitigation measures and comply with permits for water use, emissions, and hazardous waste management.
    • Inspection accessibility: Competent agencies will have unrestricted access to the facilities for inspection and verification purposes.
    • No cost to the U.S. government: Eagle Pass must provide, at no cost to the federal government, the infrastructure and equipment required for border inspection functions.
    • Diplomatic requirements: Construction may not begin until the diplomatic note exchange process with the Government of Mexico is completed.

    Permit validity

The permit is initially valid for five years. If construction does not begin within that period, the authorization will be rendered null and void. Additionally, any substantial modification to the operation, design, or ownership of the crossing must receive prior approval from the President of the United States.

    Importance of the expansion

The expansion of the Camino Real International Bridge is a strategic initiative to strengthen connectivity between the United States and Mexico, improve efficiency in border crossing times, and support the growth of international trade. It is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy of Eagle Pass and on the region’s logistics operations.
