DHS Denies Allegations About Conditions in ICE Detention Centers
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued an official statement rejecting the claims made by Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff in his report “The Abuse of Pregnant Women and Children in U.S. Immigration Detention Centers.”
According to DHS Undersecretary Tricia McLaughlin, the assertions presented are based on inaccurate information and do not reflect the reality of conditions in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. The statement emphasizes that detention centers meet higher standards than most U.S. prisons, guaranteeing comprehensive medical care, adequate nutrition, and access to communication with family members and attorneys.

Access to Facilities
The DHS states that neither Senator Ossoff nor his staff have been denied entry to ICE facilities. According to the statement, visits to multiple centers have been authorized, and during these visits no official complaints or concerns were reported.
Medical Care for Minors
Regarding allegations of alleged mistreatment of minors, the DHS maintains that ICE provides medical, dental, and mental health care within the first 12 hours of admission. In addition, a full medical evaluation is conducted within the first 14 days, and access to medical services is guaranteed 24 hours a day. For some minors, DHS points out, this is the most comprehensive care they have ever received.
Conditions for Pregnant Women
Concerning allegations of mistreatment of pregnant women, the statement indicates that such cases are rare and subject to strict oversight. Pregnant detainees receive prenatal checkups, nutritional support, and necessary accommodations, in line with community care standards. DHS clarifies that there have been no cases where pregnant women were forced to sleep on the floor.
Food and General Conditions
The DHS also denies that food is withheld or that detainees are kept in inadequate conditions. The statement underscores that ICE is regularly audited by external bodies to verify compliance with national standards. All meals are certified by dietitians, and it is ensured that each detainee receives an appropriate diet, along with medical care and access to legal and family communication.
