DHS Cancels Temporary Protected Status for Haiti
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published an official notice in the Federal Register announcing the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. After consulting with various federal agencies, Secretary Noem determined that Haiti no longer meets the legal criteria required to maintain this designation. The decision was made following an assessment conducted by USCIS, in coordination with other government entities, which concluded that allowing Haitian citizens to remain temporarily in the United States under TPS is no longer aligned with national interests.

The termination of TPS for Haiti will take effect on February 3, 2026. Individuals currently covered under this status must prepare to leave the country if they do not have another legal pathway to remain in the United States. DHS indicated that beneficiaries can use the CBP Home mobile application to register their departure. This voluntary departure process, described as safe and streamlined, offers a no-cost airline ticket, a $1,000 departure stipend, and potentially future opportunities for lawful immigration.
