The White House
Is reportedly assessing the possibility of implementing an executive action that would limit the ability of undocumented migrants to apply for asylum at the US-Mexico border, according to reports from CNN and The New York Times. Temporarily suspending the right to seek refuge for those entering US territory is being considered. The proposal would close the border in cases where more than 5,000 migrants attempt to cross in a week or more than 8,500 in a single day. This measure apparently aligns with some stricter provisions previously rejected by Republicans, demonstrating the White House’s stance on border security ahead of the elections.
The proposal involves the use of Section 212(f), an authority that would allow the president to block the entry of certain immigrants if it is deemed “detrimental” to the national interest. This is presented as an extension of tougher border legislation, revoked by Biden, but which could now be reconsidered due to electoral pressure and lack of legislative progress.

The Biden administration seeks to address migration challenges by considering executive measures to alleviate the crisis. Despite Republican resistance, options such as Section 212(f) are being explored. White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández highlighted the limitation of executive actions to implement significant reforms, emphasizing the importance of congressional action.
Biden, who sought a bipartisan agreement on border security, faces a lack of legislative progress. Although the White House advocates for significant policy reforms, it blames Republicans for rejecting proposals and prioritizing partisan politics over national security. Despite Biden’s willingness to close the border in the face of a potential legislative agreement, negotiations did not progress, leaving the government with limited options to address the migrant crisis at the southern border.
