Police must hand over undocumented immigrants to immigration authorities, Brian Kemp, governor of Georgia, signed into law on May 1 a bill that obligates police to hand over undocumented immigrants to immigration authorities.

The Republican governor approved HB 1105. The legislation mandates police to report and detain any person illegally present in Georgia, and subsequently hand them over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Additionally, the law will punish police officers who fail to notify ICE if an immigrant in custody is undocumented.

“If you enter our country illegally and continue to commit further crimes in our communities, we will not allow your crimes to go unanswered,” declared the governor, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Georgia pushes anti-immigrant laws following the death of the nursing student. The bill against undocumented immigrants was driven after the death of Laken Riley, a nursing student murdered on February 22 while on the campus of the University of Georgia.

Authorities arrested immigrant José Antonio Ibarra as the prime suspect in the murder.
