“Safe Third Country” agreement between the U.S. and Belize will allow the transfer of asylum seekers
The governments of the United States and Belize signed a pact for Belize to act as a “safe third country,” meaning that individuals seeking asylum in the U.S. could be sent to Belize while their cases are reviewed.
According to the agreement, Belize will retain absolute veto power over who is transferred, will manage limited admission quotas, and will conduct security screenings of potential transferees. The pact still requires approval from the Belizean Senate before it can take effect.

This agreement is part of the U.S. administration’s efforts to redirect migration flows and strengthen border controls through partnerships with countries in the region.
Belize would thus take on a role of receiving asylum seekers seeking protection in the U.S., marking a significant change in the migration dynamics of the area.
