USCIS Announces the Cancellation of Temporary Protected Status
On September 19, 2025, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, announced that the designation of Syria under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will be canceled. This decision marks an important policy shift for thousands of Syrians who had received humanitarian protection due to the prolonged conflicts in their country.

What does the cancellation of TPS for Syria mean?
The action was taken after careful consideration and deliberation of the country’s conditions. According to DHS, conditions in Syria no longer prevent its citizens from returning home, and Syrian nationals are given a 60-day period to voluntarily depart the United States.
During that period, it is recommended to use the CBP Home app to notify your departure. Benefits include: free plane ticket, $1,000 bonus, and possible opportunities for legal immigration in the future. If after 60 days someone with TPS from Syria is still in the U.S. without having initiated voluntary departure, they could face arrest and deportation. Those who are deported will not be able to legally return to the U.S. under certain circumstances.
Why are they doing it?
The DHS statement argues that the situation in Syria has improved to the point that TPS is no longer justified and that it is against the national interest to allow Syrians to remain in our country under temporary protection.
Implications of this measure
The consequences of this policy will be profound: uncertainty for TPS beneficiaries, risk of deportation, economic and social impact, search for alternative immigration options, and legal and humanitarian challenges.
In conclusion, DHS’s measure to end TPS for Syrians is significant. It represents a policy shift that will set in motion the end of temporary protection for thousands. For those under this status, it means they must prepare quickly: decide whether to return, seek other legal avenues, or face difficult decisions in a short time.
