The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, announced that the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have reached the figure of 5,000 arrests of undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles, California, since operations began in the sanctuary city in June 2025.

The operation is part of the federal government’s efforts to strengthen border security and combat serious crimes committed by immigrants without legal status in the U.S.

    Details of the Operation

    Start of operations: June 2025.
    Location: Los Angeles, California.
    Arrests made: 5,000 people.
Participants: Border Patrol, ICE, and local authorities.
Main focus: Individuals with serious criminal records.

Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that these actions aim to protect U.S. communities and remove from the streets individuals considered high risk, including gang members, drug traffickers, and violent offenders.

    Highlighted Case: Arrest Number 5,000

The arrest that marked this milestone was that of Gustavo García Miranda, an undocumented Mexican national and convicted drug trafficker.

    First irregular entry: 2008.
Background: Illegal reentry, aggravated crimes, and drug trafficking conviction.
Current situation: In custody at a DHS processing center.

This case was highlighted by the authorities as an example of the main objectives of the operation: to identify and detain individuals with criminal histories who pose a risk to public safety.

    Context and Reactions

DHS operations have sparked clashes with pro-immigrant groups and local authorities who defend “sanctuary city” policies. During some arrests, agents reported riots and assaults by demonstrators.

Despite this, Secretary Noem reiterated that ICE and Border Patrol actions will continue and that anyone attempting to obstruct law enforcement will face legal consequences.
