US Ends TPS for Haiti
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, setting the end date for September 2, 2025. The decision was communicated by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem after a technical review of current conditions in the Caribbean country.
What does the cancellation of TPS for Haiti mean?
TPS is an immigration benefit that allows citizens of certain countries to remain and work temporarily in the United States when their home country is experiencing exceptional circumstances, such as natural disasters or armed conflicts. This designation, granted to Haiti in previous years for humanitarian reasons, will expire on August 3, 2025, and will be officially canceled on September 2, 2025.

The decision was made following a periodic review, as required by law, which obligates DHS to assess the conditions in the beneficiary country at least 60 days before the program’s expiration date.
Evaluation and reasons for cancellation
According to the official statement, environmental conditions in Haiti have improved sufficiently to allow the safe return of its citizens. The assessment was conducted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with support from the Department of State, concluding that the country no longer meets the legal requirements to maintain the TPS designation.
Additionally, it is argued that extending the stay of Haitian citizens under this measure no longer serves the national interest.
Options for TPS beneficiaries
Although the designation is ending, DHS encourages Haitian citizens to explore other legal pathways to remain in the country, provided they meet the requirements established by law. Those who choose to return to Haiti can manage and report their voluntary departure through the official CBP Home app, managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
DHS also emphasized that resources to support voluntary return are active and accessible through federal government platforms.
Conclusion
The termination of TPS for Haiti marks an important shift in U.S. immigration policy toward the country. Starting September 2, 2025, beneficiaries will need to make key decisions about their immigration status, whether by exploring new legal options or preparing for voluntary return. The U.S. government recommends that Haitian citizens stay informed and use official channels like CBP Home to facilitate any processes related to departure or regularization.
