Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas has denied wrongdoing and defends himself amid a House of Representatives vote on his removal. The vote precedes a procedural vote in the Senate on a new border security bill.

The last time the House voted to remove a cabinet member was in 1876, when the Senate acquitted a secretary of war investigated for corruption. Mayorkas’s removal is criticized by Democrats, who see it as an attempt to score political points ahead of the November elections. However, supporters argue that Mayorkas’s actions justify the process, accusing him of failing to enforce laws and losing the trust of the American public.

The House was already investigating whether any of Biden’s past behaviors before reaching the White House could have constituted a felony or misdemeanor. But even some Republicans have said they do not yet see that evidence.

Democrats view the effort as retaliation for leading two impeachment trials against former Republican President Donald Trump.

Previously, Senate Republicans seemed to have killed a bipartisan border security agreement.

The decision to remove a cabinet secretary has only been made once in US history.
